The Best Hybrid Bikes We’d Buy Right Now

However, you will often not have to worry about mounting any of this additional equipment. Many models already come with all of these additions as standard equipment.
Knowing this, keep reading below to see the best hybrid bikes we recommend for men and women, keeping these characteristics in mind.

Things to Consider When Buying a Hybrid Bike
What Is a Hybrid Bike?
A hybrid bike, as its name implies, is a mix of two types of bicycles—road bikes and mountain bikes. These bikes take the best characteristics from both of these types which makes them suitable for different types of terrain, paved and unpaved roads, commuting, recreational riding, and more.
The frame of best hybrids is typically made of aluminum or steel and its geometry is more comfortable than both road bikes and MTB. It allows the rider to sit in a more upright position, have better visibility, and put less strain on the back and neck muscles.
A high-quality model will also have tires that are slightly wider than on a road bike. They can be anywhere between 28-32c, or wider, up to 42c. This gives the rider a more enjoyable ride and makes the bike more versatile.
Hybrid bikes also often come with accessories like fenders and racks, or at least feature mounts to retrofit these extras yourself. Therefore, you can use them to carry cargo, ride in wet weather, or ride at night with lights.
A lot of modern models feature wide-range gears with external derailleurs or internal gears and belt drives, disc brakes, and suspension forks. However, we would stay away from suspension forks on budget models as they add excessive weight and perform poorly.

Types of Hybrid Bikes
Hybrid bikes come in a lot of different types, each of which is more or less suitable for a specific kind of riding. Even though these differences sometimes appear to be minimal, they will affect the ride quality and efficiency in the real world.
Here are some of the most common types that you should know about:
- Fitness Hybrid Bikes: This type is also known as road hybrid bikes because they are similar to road bikes. Best hybrid fitness bikes have thinner tires and lightweight framesets but come with flat bars. They are ideal for fitness riding and speedy commutes.
- Comfort Hybrid Bikes: These are bikes with comfort features such as dual-spring saddles, wide tires, upright geometry, and sometimes even front suspension. They often also have step-through frames for easy access.
- Dual Sport Hybrid Bikes: If you want to ride both on- and off-road, this is the type for you. These models typically have wide, knobby tires and front suspension, so they are suitable for paved and unpaved roads.
- Commuter Hybrid Bikes: As you can guess, these are bikes for commuting. They are characterized by having fenders, lights, a kickstand, and even a rear rack. Their main priorities are comfort and practicality for everyday riding, in varying conditions.
Now that you know about all the different types, you need to decide which one to get. Ask yourself these questions:
What do you need a bike for? Where will you ride? On what kind of terrain and in what weather? How often will you ride it? Is speed more important for you than relaxed upright geometry? What about equipment, do you think you will need anything apart from the standard road bike equipment?

What Features to Look for in a Hybrid Bike?
Choosing the right hybrid bike largely depends on your needs and riding preferences, considering there are so many different models out there.
Frame Material
Most modern hybrid bikes are made with aluminum, as it offers the best balance between price, weight, and strength.
Budget models feature aluminum or steel forks, whereas more expensive models will have a more lightweight carbon fiber fork.
If you’re willing to spend more, high-end models have full carbon frames that lower weight and improve comfort slightly.
However, for most recreational riders who are looking to get the most bang for their buck, aluminum will be the best choice.
Suspension Fork
Having a front suspension fork could be good if you plan to ride on unpaved roads, such as gravel and dirt. However, in most cases, we’d advise against getting a hybrid bike with front suspension.
More often than not, these are cheap forks that perform poorly, increase weight, and add another layer of complexity in terms of maintenance.
For most riders, a rigid fork will be sufficient, especially because most hybrids have wider tires that absorb vibrations from the road.
Wide-Range Gears
A good hybrid bike should have a wide range of gears to be able to tackle different terrains.
Most modern models have a rear cassette with 9-11 gears and a single or double chainring on the front. However, budget bikes may come with fewer gears on the cassette and a triple chainring on the front.
If you have a larger budget and you don’t like maintenance, you should consider belt drive bikes with a belt instead of a chain and internal gears instead of a traditional derailleur. These improve durability and significantly simplify maintenance.
Wider Tires
Most hybrid bikes have 700c wheels and a tire width that sits between road bike and mountain bike tires, which means anywhere between 30mm and 40mm.
Recently, many brands have been making models with slightly smaller 650B wheels and wider tires that allow for multi-surface riding.
Hybrid bike tires also typically have puncture resistance and many models come with reflective sidewalls, which are important features when riding in urban settings.
Disc Brakes
Disc brakes have become almost ubiquitous on hybrid bikes as they offer more stopping power and better control, which is especially important for city commuting.
Entry-level models feature mechanical disc brakes, whereas more expensive models come with smoother and more powerful hydraulic disc brakes.
Some budget bikes still use rim brakes, but these are becoming harder and harder to find.
What Accessories Do Hybrid Bikes Need?
Hybrid bikes are often used year-round, so most models will either come with fenders preinstalled or mounts to retrofit them yourself.
The same goes for racks, which can be useful for carrying panniers with work equipment or groceries, or fitting a child seat for transporting kids.
Commuting on a hybrid also often involves riding at night, so lights are a must as well. Higher-end models have dynamo-powered front and rear lights, but if yours don’t, you can easily mount battery-powered ones.
A lock and a bell are also useful accessories to have when riding in an urban environment. A bell will allow you to prevent getting in a sticky situation with pedestrians or other cyclists, whereas a heavy-duty lock is crucial to prevent your bike from getting stolen if parked on a city street.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are the best hybrid bike brands?
The best hybrid bike brands to consider when buying your next bike include:
- Priority Bicycles
- Co-op Cycles
- Trek
- Giant
- Cannondale
Of course, there are many other popular brands that make great hybrid bikes, but these are the ones that offer the best bang for the buck and the biggest selection, in our opinion.
Is a hybrid bike good for long distances?
Some hybrid bikes are good for covering long distances, whereas others are not. Best hybrid fitness bikes can easily deal with long rides, but some dual-sport and commuter models can be suitable as well. Overall, most models are built for moderately long rides on paved roads.
How to choose a hybrid bike?
When choosing the best hybrid bike for yourself, you need to consider your needs and your budget. Once you know your budget, you can start thinking about what type of bike is best for you and what features you would like to have.
Are hybrid bikes good for fitness?
Hybrid bikes are an excellent choice for fitness riding. Many people use them for weight loss because of their numerous benefits and handy features. They typically have a relaxed geometry, sleek tires, and helpful accessories. Therefore, you can ride them for a long time and gradually improve your fitness.
Is a hybrid bike good for touring?
A hybrid bike can be a good choice for touring, but not for very long tours. Most models come with flat bars that limit your choice of hand positions. For that reason, drop bars are a much better choice. However, this type of bike can be perfect for short and moderate tours.
How much should I spend on a hybrid bike?
The amount of money you should spend on a hybrid bike depends on your budget, your needs, and your expectations. The majority of decent-quality models cost between $500 and $1,000. If you pay more than that, you may get a carbon frame and better components.
Are hybrid bikes faster than mountain bikes?
Most hybrid bikes are faster than mountain bikes because they have narrower tires that are also often sleek. These bikes also often have gears that are more suitable for riding fast on paved roads, so it’s easier to maintain a higher average speed compared to mountain bikes.
What size hybrid bike should I buy?
In order to determine what size hybrid bike you should buy, you need to measure your height and your inseam. After that, you need to find a size chart for the bike model you are interested in and determine your ideal frame size.
How fast can a hybrid bike go?
Most hybrid bikes can easily maintain average speeds between 12 mph and 15 mph. Best comfort hybrid bikes will be closer to the lower limit, whereas fitness hybrid bikes will be close or above the upper limit. Of course, this also depends on your legs and external factors, such as the wind.
What’s the difference between a gravel bike and a hybrid bike?
A gravel bike has drop bars and is intended for off-road riding, whereas a hybrid bike comes with flat bars and is better for paved roads. Gravel bikes and hybrid bikes also have different geometries. Hybrids generally prioritize comfort, whereas gravel grinders prioritize off-road performance.
If you didn’t find what you were looking for, you can find a large selection of hybrid bikes on REI and Jenson USA or buy used from The Pro’s Closet.
Hi M,
Thanks for the input. Cheers!
Hi Jeff, Thanks so much for providing your expertise and knowledge in helping me reseacrh the right bike for me. I had read earlier versions of this article and had decided that the cannondale CX2 or the Trek Dual Sport 3 were going to be the best bikes for my search of a bike that I can hit road and light trails as well as doing some work outs. But I am having second thoughts and thinking I should spurge a little more and upgrade to the Dual Sport 4. I like the idea of having only one shifter for the rear with plenty of range in the cassette which I think is 11-51. I figure it would be less maintenance with no front derailleur. I also like that shock can be locked/unlocked from the left side handle bar. Do you think it is worth paying the extra $300 for those features?
Thanks so much for you time and effort, I have read your article several times and I appreciate your efforts to keep us all informed with the latest up to date information
Hi John,
I agree with your thoughts. Having less gears means little maintenance issues and in the end you save more money. So yes, why not spend more for a kind of bike that will last longer? Cheers!
Hey there, I really appreciate this comprehensive and informative review. I recently sold my car to fully commit to the bike to work, bike to everything life.
I came across this cool giveaway – you can win a Marin bike among other things. Figured I’d share: http://www.pedalporteurco.com/giveaway
Hi Bryan,
Wow this is amazing! Thanks for sharing. Congratulations for leading the life of health and fitness. You will not regret it.
Thank you Jeff for the very informative review and recommendations. I am a 1.8m tall, 79kg, 64 year old male. I am looking for a bike to allow me to ride around my hilly neighborhood and to help me get into shape. The knees are not great and the heart needs some serious pumping. Comfort, quality and ability to climb hills are priorities. Budget is not too much of an issue but I always believe in money for value. I would appreciate your advise on a few options. Thanks. Venu
I just like to add that I am looking at the Specialized Sirius Elite but unfortunately it will only be available in October 2020. I like to get going sooner than this. Venu
Hi Venu,
Please check out our Best ROAD Bikes to see if you are willing to wait. Cheers!
Hi Venu,
There are different bikes you need to look into before making a decision. There are times when we buy a bike by impulse and find out it is not suited for our style of riding. You need to look into our Hardtail Mountain Bikes, our Best Road Bikes, also the Gravel bikes if you are into road and casual off road riding style. You can also decide if you want to go ahead and get a Hybrid Bike. Please check our Bike sizing post to ensure you get the right size for you.
Good day. I’m planning to get into biking as I haven’t ridden since my teens. I want to do light dirt trails but also paved, flat trails. I’m a beginner and my fitness level is still novice. I’m willing to spend the money if it means I get a good all-round bike that doesn’t require a lot of technical knowledge to operate and ride it. I thought a MTB would be a good idea, but I’ve been advised that the weight (>30 lbs) will outweigh the fun/benefits of riding the bike. So a hybrid was suggested. I’ve narrowed it down to four bikes: DRT 1.2, CTY 1.2, Ghost Square Cross 1.8 and Quick CX 2 (I hope it’s allowed to write the model names?). Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you very much.
Hi AT, I like the models you shortlisted. I think it boils down to whether or not you want front suspension. It will add a lot of weight, but it will make your dirt rides a bit more comfortable.
If you plan to spend more time on paved roads, I recommend the CTY 1.2. However, if you plan to stick to dirt trails, Quick CX 2 would be a better choice. Hope this helps. 🙂
Jeff, thank you for the response. I actually ended up getting the CTY 2.2. It was a lot more money than I intended to spend, but I figured this is my one and only first bike so why not. Thank you for your guidance.
You’re welcome, I’m glad I could help. I think you made a good decision, that’s an excellent bike that will last you a long time. Have fun! 🙂
Thank you for this valuable explanation as I’ve been slightly overwhelmed with my search. The Hybrid is definitely for me as it offers the combination of terrains. I’m into fitness however I’m a beginner with cycling. I printed out this information & with your helpful tips, I can narrow my search and purchase soon.
You’re welcome, Dominique. I’m glad you found the article helpful! 🙂
Any suggestion for 12 years old daughter ? I need a good hybrid bike for her
I recommend Co-op Cycles REV CTY with 24″ wheels. We wrote about it in more detail if you’re interested in learning more. It has excellent value for money, quality components, and would likely fit your daughter size-wise.
Hi Jeff, I was just looking at the NY Times Wirecutter column, which has steered me right a few times. For best all-around hybrid they suggest the Marin Fairfax 1 or 2. I didn’t see any Marin bikes listed here, and I’m wondering if that’s a red flag about buying one? Thanks…
Hello Jeff, not at all. Marin makes quality bikes, we have their models listed in several other reviews. 🙂
Thank you, Jeff. Safe riding and be well!
Hey Jeff Balton,
Good Day Buddy!
You’re my inspiration guy. Thanks for this awesome blog, because of you I started my blogging journey. BTW I love RadRover 5 so much <3 It inspects everything from the frame alignment, wheels, brakes, and gears. All the accessories are correctly fitted to prevent any damages from occurring.
Thank You Again and Best of Luck Buddy 🙂
Best Regards,
Rabbi Hossain Khan
Hi Rabbi Hossain Khan, I’m glad to hear you enjoy my website! Good luck on your journey as well. 🙂
